What is bamboo?

Bamboo is the fastest-growing grass in the world. It is strong, renewable, sustainable and it grows up to a metre a day. Bamboo as a material can be rock-hard or flexible, making for endless possibilities. But its use in the textile industry has been the most surprising application of bamboo in the last ten years.

What are the benefits of bamboo clothing?

Royal Bamboo basics feel luxurious and silky smooth to the touch, due to the rounded shape of the fibre. Bamboo products also have antibacterial qualities, which ensures that bamboo clothing smells and stays fresh longer. You can wear Royal Bamboo shirts multiple times without having to wash them. Our shirts are perfect for if you have sensitive skin. The breathable and thermo-regulating properties of bamboo fabric keep your body cool and dry on warm days and warm when it’s cold.

Why is bamboo better for the environment than cotton?

Bamboo is one of the most economical and ecological products in the world. Bamboo’s natural growth process requires a fraction of the time and resources that cotton requires for the same amount of clothing. Bamboo requires less land and water and does not need the artificial fertilizers and pesticides that cotton uses. Even organic cotton crops require large plantations and constant irrigation. Bamboo, on the other hand, can thrive on natural rainfall, requires less space because it grows upwards, can be harvested multiple times and does not need to be treated with pesticides because of its natural antibacterial properties.

Shouldn’t bamboo be Panda food?

The bamboo that we use for the Royal Bamboo collection is Moso bamboo, which is grown in the Yunnan province in China. The main ingredient on the menu of the very picky Giant Panda is Bashania Fangiana. This bamboo grows in large areas in the Western Sichuan mountains. This means that the panda does not eat the Moso bamboo which we use for our products.

We should consider ourselves lucky to be blessed with such a marvellous plant which can survive in the direst circumstances and which grows in so many different climates. Royal Bamboo is a proud supporter and promoter of bamboo.
